UTHealth Houston Concussion Program

UTHealth Houston Concussion Program

Concussion as a sports-related injury has gained more attention than all other sports injuries combined. But concussions aren’t limited to sports. Recreational activities, falls, and motor vehicle crashes also contribute to this form of traumatic brain injury.

The UTHealth Houston Concussion Program features a multidisciplinary team focused on the same goal: helping individuals recover from concussions and return to their daily activities, school, work, or sports.

How we can help

No two concussions are alike. They require individualized attention and a specialized team to diagnose a concussion and provide treatment options.

Our program, led by Summer Ott, PsyD, includes primary care sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, neurologists, neuropsychologists, neurosurgeons, and rehabilitation specialists.

Our services

With a focus on education and treatment, our specialists are committed to preventing injury and minimizing the damage once a concussion has occurred. We provide:

  • Direct access to medical experts for treatment of concussions and head injuries
  • Personalized recommendations for return to play/return to learn
  • Pre- and post-concussion neurocognitive testing
  • Medication management, when necessary
  • Supportive counseling and cognitive rehabilitation

Studies show athletes who play through an injury will have symptoms for a longer period of time and prolonged recoveries. Our team will help you get healthy to achieve longevity in athletics, academics, and your future career.

Our expertise

The concussion program works with patients of all ages, from children to older adults.

Researchers in our concussion program strive to improve patient outcomes by advancing how sports-related concussions are reported, diagnosed, treated, and managed. The team participates in ongoing research projects and innovations to support player safety and concussion treatment.
