Treatment Options for Epilepsy
The treatment options vary for people who have epilepsy. It can hinge on what type of epilepsy you have and what type of seizures. Typically, medication is the first line of defense unless imaging reveals a tumor or bleeding blood vessel.
Epilepsy Medications
Oral anticonvulsant drugs are used to eliminate or reduce the number of seizures a patient experiences. A physician will evaluate which type of medication is best after reviewing your health records. Patients can expect for the dosage to be adjusted over time and different medications used to try and control seizures. It is very important for patients with epilepsy to not any doses and to take their medication at the same time each day. Do not stop taking your medications without speaking to your health care provider.
Ketogenic Diet
Some people with epilepsy report more seizure control when adhering to a ketogenic diet. People interested in this approach should speak with their neurologist/epileptologist about this option.
Neurological Surgery
There are several state-of-the-art options aimed at improving quality of life if medications do not control seizures. Review options with your health care provider and discuss which ones are available for adults and/or pediatric patients.
