Overview

About

Mary Austin, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric surgeon specializing in general and thoracic surgery. She treats patients up to 18 years old. Her practice philosophy is to treat each child and family as she would want her own to be treated. She takes the time needed to explain health problems and plans to patients and families.

Austin is an associate professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and in surgical oncology and pediatrics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Her research focus is clinical outcomes research in pediatric surgical oncology. She is also interested in identifying geographic and socioeconomic barriers to care for pediatric cancer patients and working to dissolve these barriers.

Outside of work, Austin enjoys spending time with her husband and children, competing in triathlons, cycling, traveling, and family activities.

The experience was great. I loved the way that they treated me and my daughter. The only thing is the wait time. It said to arrive early and I'll be seeing a taste time, but I was seeing a little, a while after my appointment. But other than that, it was quick and easy. They gave me all the information I needed, answered all the questions that I had. Overall, I loved the staff. It was just the right time. Thank you.

The doctor was very knowledgeable. She took the time to explain to me about my daughter's situation. I would recommend her to any other patient as well. She did go over her next steps, what needed to be done in a couple of months. I would also like to see her again, that provider again. I also recommend that provider, like I said, to other people that I know as well.

Dr mary Austin & nurses were great! We had seen Dr [...] at pedi dermatology at ut! And it was awful, her staff/nurses everything was terrible, Dr [...] was fabulous and so nice & her staff was on it. Dr [...] staff not so much , said they never Received my pathology I had to go find it... then to find out that they did have it and they just couldn't find it for three weeks in their office.. that's the office if I were you I'd be concerned about!

They listen to my concerns and provided some very useful advice. I will definitely take my baby again.

The whole team approach that is being pursued (GI specialist, surgeon, pathologist, etc) really makes me feel like my child is getting the best care he can. Even with a complicated issue it feels like everyone is bringing their best thoughts to the table in order to benefit from the collaboration and it helps me to feel more comfortable with his future procedures. Dr. Austin has been handling my son's care since he was born and I have always felt that she was interested in what is best for his quality of life. She takes an interest in him as a person and not just a patient which helps put both him and myself at ease.
