Mark J. Irby, PA-C, assists patients in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. His primary focus is treating knee and shoulder ailments.
He attended the University of Texas at Austin for his undergraduate education and received his Master of Science in physician assistant studies at Baylor College of Medicine in 2012. Since then, he has worked with Steven E. Flores, MD, specializing in sports medicine.
Irby is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants.
In his free time, he enjoys traveling, hiking, and spending time with his wife and daughter.

Dr. Irby was very thorough, informative and patient. He explained everything suggested the injections and PT, but did explain that replacement of the knee would be in the future but for me not to wait until being 76 of age. Every appointment was a pleasure. All the providers were very knowledgeable and took the time to explain the condition and options clearly. I never had to wait in the waiting room. It was always easy to get in touch with Dr. Flores' office and reaching Claudia was very easy. The entire team helped move surgery along really well, providing me with all the information that I needed. Dr. Flores was very thorough with his description of the surgery and expectations and waited and gave me the time to heal to my best possible level prior to having me go ahead with surgery in order to enable a quick and easy recovery. All in all, my experience was excellent.
The only thing that is needed, and in the case of Mark, when Pedro Ortiz came to visit us here, is that we don't speak any English and he doesn't speak any Spanish, so that's the only difficult thing. Everything else is perfect.
Dr. Mark gave me all the information that I was looking for and explained everything about my case.

Mr. Irby is a phenomenal provider. I've been seeing him for several months. He is extremely professional. He's very caring. He spends a lot of time truly listening and trying to figure out the best possible plan moving forward. And I actually did recommend my mother to come see him as well with a knee issue that she has and we actually were able to get an appointment right after mine. So scheduling was awesome. And I just can't say enough things about Mark Irby. Again, very professional, very kind, very caring, great bedside manner. Spends a lot of time with you, really is invested in trying to be the very best PA he can. And it's been a pleasure to work with him and I look forward to working with him in the future. My encounter with Mark was secondary to complications from a previous doctor at Memorial Hermann's, and everything went so much more smoother the second time around. I would highly recommend Dr. Flores and Mark to serve patients because they had my best interest at heart. Thank you.

Mark seems very competent, and I appreciate his time. My overall issue with UT is that I call to make an appt to see the Orthopedic surgeon, and I end up seeing the PA. This is fine for routine issues such as knee injections, etc. But, I haven't seen or spoken to Dr. Flores in any of at least my previous three visits. I now have an issue with my knee that likely needs some sort of surgery, some very serious... and yet I still meet with the PA, and he relays my concerns/questions to Dr. Flores, and then the PA relays DR. Flores' answers back to me. Again, I have no complaints or issues with Mark, but I need to speak directly to the doctor, face to face... which seems to be hard to arrange at UT. In this instance, when the recommended treatment is going to be a full knee replacement, it wouldn't seem like a big ask to meet with the doctor. Yes, I know Dr. Flores does not do that type of surgery, but I assume you would understand my concerns/comments. I will be changing doctors associated with other facilities in order to make sure I see an orthopedic surgeon face to face to discuss my concerns. Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts.
Mark is very attentive, listens carefully and responds appropriately. Concerns were discussed thoroughly and addressed. The appointment did not feel rushed.
