Joseph R. Cali Jr., MD, FACS, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in colon and rectal surgery.
He’s an associate professor in the Department of Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
Cali earned his doctorate of medicine from Creighton University School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery residency at Boston Medical Center – Newton Pavilion and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
He and his wife are the parents of twins. As a family, they enjoy camping, snow skiing, and hiking.

My insurance coverage has been the same for years and I've seen Dr. Cali for over a decade now. Front desk employees have come and gone and the new group of reps have attempted to charge me more than my copay after my visit with the doctor. The explanation they offer is that I haven't met my deductible. I explained that the doctor didn't complete any procedures that warrant additional fees, and with every medical professional I've seen - when there's a procedure that'll go beyond the visit at hand, I am provided with costs associated with the procedure before anything is done. In this case... Both last visits I've had have been simple routine. Again - no procedures done and they want to dip into my deductible. This is giving me the sense that something unethical is taking place with patients and are being charged more than their copay. What happens to the poor people who don't know better and just fork up more money outside of their copay? This seems predatory. I am debating if I want to continue being a patient here. Wrong is wrong.

Dr. Cali is wonderful. I would never go to another doctor. His intake nurse was not as friendly as I had hoped. I used to come to him a long time ago and the office staff treated me like family. I know it's been a long time, but I'm just used to the office staff being a little more friendly. So, just wanted to get that feedback.
