About

Eric J. Thomas, MD, MPH, is fellowship-trained and board-certified in internal medicine. He’s passionate and knowledgeable about disease prevention and health promotion through diet and exercise. He helps patients manage multiple complex medical conditions by thoughtfully evaluating new symptoms to make timely and correct diagnoses.

Thomas encourages patient engagement and shared decision-making in all aspects of care. He believes primary care is team-based, with the patient being the most important team member. He works with a remarkable multidisciplinary team that strives to be responsive to calls and messages and listens closely to patient concerns.

Thomas is a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and associate dean for healthcare quality at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He holds the Griff T. Ross Professorship in Humanities and Technology in Health Care.

His current research focuses on diagnostic errors, measuring safety culture, improving teamwork, and using health information technology to improve quality and safety.

In 2007, Thomas received the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award for Research from the National Quality Forum and Joint Commission. He co-leads a wide range of efforts to measure and improve the quality and safety of care delivered at UT Physicians clinics. As a professor, he teaches students, residents, and junior faculty members.

Outside of work, Thomas enjoys spending time with his family. He likes to cook, read, and exercise through swimming, cycling, or hiking.

Good continued care.

I like Dr. Thomas. This particular visit had a delay of about an hour. The particular resident on staff was mostly interested in asking a bunch of questions about my medical history versus finding out what I thought about my health conditions or what I might want or not want for my care. I didn't find the conversation with the resident to be useful. I wound up making a referral request with the UT app while I was waiting. I didn't mention it to the resident, and he didn't ask. I am hopeful that there will be a different resident next time.

I despise wording that asks and it's marketing things, how likely am I? Likely has two meanings here. The better meaning I think of likely implies probability. Are you likely, is this likely to result in a recommendation? I don't go around recommending. Very few people, if any, ask me for feedback or what doctor should I see. But if anyone did, then I would be completely likely to say Dr. Thomas and his team provide excellent care and I feel every confidence in it. So it's just a, maybe it's a matter of semantics, but it's a nuisance to me to be asked about likelihood when it has different meanings. So, bye.

Dr Eric Thomas and the attending Dr who both saw me were great and took time to ask all the questions about my health history as this was an establishing care visit. My experience was great with a quick check-in, short wait, and thorough visit. When complete I knew next steps and expectations and always have the MyChart app to contact Dr Thomas if required. Extremely pleased.

Everyone was very friendly from receptionist to doctors and lab personnel. The nurse was not quite as friendly. It would be nice if they introduced themselves. Lab technician that drew my blood was great. My veins don't always want to cooperate. She knew what she was doing!! The 2 doctor system is different but seemed to work. Just want to be sure Dr Thomas is fully engaged in this scenario. Seemed to be

Excellent!

The resident I spoke with lacked knowledge about ACOG and USPSTF guidelines for women's health care items, such as mammograms and Pap smears. He also struggled to send to the pharmacy the one antinausea prescription we discussed (I called after the appointment, and a nurse sent it after correcting it), and he was concerned about the potential cardiovascular considerations of the antinausea medication, which I do not understand, given that the practice has previously put in my chart that it considers me to be of low cardiovascular risk.
