Overview

About

Growing up in a large farming family in Iowa, Dr. Daniel Freet did manual labor with his five siblings, managing fields and working with pigs and cows. “I liked it because we had to do it all together as a group; it was a social thing.”

Today, he still enjoys a collaborative environment in the Surgical Department at UTHealth Houston. “Together, we take care of a lot of trauma patients, and for many of them, there are several follow up surgeries and appointments. You get to know their families and share in the process.”

Freet knew he wanted to be a doctor when he was a child. Staying up late to watch the television show MASH with his father, he was inspired by the Hawkeye Pierce character. After getting a degree in anthropology at the University of Iowa, he stayed at the university’s medical school. “But I knew I couldn’t handle the cold up there any longer, so I applied for every residency program in Texas,” he said, choosing UT.

In his spare time, Freet fosters dogs and has a few dogs of his own. “I’m lucky. I’m doing exactly what I wanted to do with my life.”

Dr. Freet was recently listed as a 2021 Top Doctor by Houstonia Magazine for plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Dr Freet made it easy to talk to and make me feel comfortable letting him Know what I'm wanting

Best experience I've ever had in a doctors waiting room or office.

The baby doctors, residents, suck at listening and writing notes. Seems like Dr. Mentz just copied and pasted from my previous visit. And got several important things wrong, or didn't include main concerns!

Everyone at the office, from the front desk staff to [...] and Dr. Freet, amazing. Made me feel really comfortable about everything. Thank you very much.

Dr. Freet is exceptionally kind and generous as a physician. His emotional warmth creates an atmosphere of trust. He is a person who gives praise for good outcomes and encouragement when good outcomes are not so obvious. He has always performed excellent care for me, and after having three surgeries under his leadership, I can almost unequivocally say that he is the best plastic surgeon for transgender health care (in n my humble opinion). We have the expense of travel, meals and accommodations for both my wife and me to have treatment in Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, but despite the expenses, I would rather be cared for by him than by any other doctor. I am so happy with the results of my facial feminization surgery and vaginoplasty and revision. He has given me the greatest gift, that being a new body that matches the woman inside I am. Much, much, much thanks to Dr. Freet and his team for their love and kind caring!

Honestly, everything was awesome. I just had surgery with Dr. Freet today, so my throat is a little scratchy from the intubation, but honestly, another great experience. You guys are absolutely awesome. [...]

Everyone was so sweet and was able to answer every question I had - they were also very understanding when I wasn't entirely sure how to answer and helped guide me in how to communicate what I was trying to say! Very considerate, excited for my surgery date!

The entire staff since I asked for a consultation has been wonderfully supportive and has been guiding me through the different steps of what is needed for a complex process. Once I met with Dr. Freet, while not all of my anxiety went away (it's surgery after all), I was very relieved at his bedside manner, time he took with me to explain different pieces of the surgery and options, and the way in which he talked with me and his co-workers. He seemed confident, experienced, and knowledgeable while also being down to earth, respectful, and understanding. I feel comfortable moving forward in his care.

The office needs to learn to do paperwork with the hospital.

Sep 11, 2024

Very nice and friendly staff

Sep 9, 2024

Despite me showing up 20 minutes late, every step of the experience was very pleasant and there was never a time I felt ignored, rushed, or like I wasn't getting enough information. By the nature of the visit (top surgery consult) I did feel kind of vulnerable and I really appreciate the grace and professionalism I experienced from all the staff.

Absolutely wonderful. I felt safe, at ease, and cared for.

Jul 17, 2024

The fact that telemedicine visits are no longer allowed for out of town patients is taxing and is a reason why many individuals will no longer see this provider. I do not live in Texas and it is VERY inconvenient for me to take time off of work, buy a plane ticket, find a place to stay, rent a car, and pay for parking and gas for a 30 minute appointment saying "this is what we're going to do next we'll contact you with a date for your next procedure". I should not have to travel and spend an exorbitant amount of money for an appointment that could have been a phone call. I, along with others, will likely seek to find a different surgeon to complete the remainder of my procedures. Not because of my surgeon but because of policy. Also, this policy seems to be exclusionary because many of the patients that see Dr. Freet for this particular procedure are not residents and travel. This is creating a black eye for UT in the LGBTQIA space.
