Anju Bhardwaj, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist specializing in advanced heart failure, transplant cardiology, and cardiovascular disease. Her clinical and research passions lie in areas such as cardiogenic shock, acute heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and the unique aspects of heart failure in women.
Bhardwaj serves as an assistant professor at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She is the associate program director for the General Cardiology fellowship and the director of Heart Failure ICU at Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center. She also leads McGovern Medical School’s amyloidosis program and plays a key role in the multidisciplinary sarcoidosis program.
She earned her medical degree from Government Medical College in India before moving to the United States for further training. She completed her internal medicine residency at St. Joseph’s University and clinical and research fellowships at Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts General Hospital, Case Western Reserve University, and Baylor College of Medicine. She is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. She also completed a specialized electrophysiology fellowship focused on device therapy.
A prolific researcher, Bhardwaj was recognized as a Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA), an honor that acknowledges her significant contributions to cardiovascular medicine and research. She is an associate editor of the Journal of American College of Cardiology: Advances, section editor for the ASAIO journal (American Society for Artificial Internal Organs). She also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cardiac Failure and JACC: Heart Failure. She has published extensively in high-impact cardiology journals and has presented at numerous national and international conferences.
Bhardwaj is actively engaged in professional organizations, including the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the Heart Failure Society of America, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the Women in Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support. She holds leadership positions as chair of the Critical Care Cardiology Texas Local Chapter-ACC and the incoming chair of the Cardiology Professional Community at ISHLT, and on the leadership council for WITMCS.
Outside of her professional commitments, Bhardwaj is a devoted aunt and enjoys spending time with her nephews. She also has a personal goal of traveling the globe and tackling all the major hiking trails.
