Please review the information below to learn more about different types of imaging/testing, recommended locations, how to prepare, and additional information on prescribed medications and refills.

Orders for your testing/imaging and prescriptions will be provided at the time of your appointment. Please go to your testing/imaging location, and complete ALL requested testing/imaging procedures before your next scheduled appointment. Missing or incomplete testing/image procedures may cause your appointment to be postponed until then.

  • Considered the recommended standard diagnostic tool, NPT assesses a patient’s memory, visuospatial skills, and any potential impairment.

  • If your insurance is out of network, our office can refer you to another testing site.
    • If you have previously had neuropsychological testing elsewhere, we recommend any repeat testing be done with the same neuropsychologist to obtain an accurate comparison. Please have that office fax your results over to our office after completion of testing.

  • Purpose: To assess any structural changes or stroke/ bleeds/ tumor/ abscesses causing cognitive issues. Please schedule an MRI at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Our office has direct access to images obtained there, and it will allow us to access and review the results immediately.

  • If you choose another location, please obtain a copy of your imaging on a CD and bring it to your next appointment for us to review.
  • Purpose: A computed tomography (CT) scan uses X-rays to make detailed pictures of structures of the brain. The scheduling department at Memorial Hermann will call you to make an appointment
  • If you choose another location, please obtain a copy of your imaging on a CD and bring it to your next appointment for us to review.
  • Purpose: To assess pattern of metabolic activity in the brain and differentiate between different causes of impairment. Please schedule an FDG PET scan at the location below. This is a specialized test, and our office has direct access to images obtained there. It will allow us to access and review the images immediately. The scheduling department will call you to make an appointment
  • For best results, the location below is the only one that routinely performs this test.

    • Memorial Hermann will attempt to precertify the exam with your insurance before your scan. If the insurance requires a peer-to-peer or denies the exam, we will refer you to another location.
  • Purpose: To assess dopamine activity in the basal ganglia to differentiate between different causes of physical symptoms. Please schedule DAT SPECT Scan at the below location. This is a specialized test that must be completed at the location below in order to provide our physicians the information needed. Our office has direct access to images obtained there, and it will allow us to access and review the images immediately. The scheduling department will call you to make an appointment.

  • Please do not have this exam performed elsewhere. We order this test with unique parameters which the above location has experience with.
  • Purpose: To assess axonal (cables connecting brain cells) changes or flow of cerebrospinal fluid along with any structural changes or stroke/ bleeds/ tumor/ abscesses causing cognitive issues.   • PURPOSE: Amyvid (Florbetapir) is a radio-labeled diagnostic agent for PET imaging of the brain. The images estimate beta-amyloid neuritic plaque density in adult patients with cognitive impairment. Please schedule an Amyvid PET Scan at the location below. Our office has direct access to images obtained there, and it will allow us to access and review the images immediately. The scheduling department will call you to make an appointment.

  • Purpose: A magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) is a type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to provide pictures of blood vessels within the brain and neck. Please schedule an MRA at the location below. Our office has direct access to images obtained there, and it will allow us to access and review the images immediately.   • Please schedule lab tests at any Quest laboratory that does blood work or another preferred location to our office. Lab orders are given at the time of the appointment. IMPORTANT: Please be aware that insurance may not cover some tests. Results can be faxed to (713) 383-1435.

    • CBC/ Electrolytes/ Glucose/ HgbA1c/ LFTs/ Renal Function Tests/ TFTs/ Lipids/ Vitamin B1/ Vitamin B12/ Folate/ Vitamin D/ Homocysteine/ Creatinine Kinase/ ESR/ RPR/ ApoE
    • Creatinine Kinase/ LFTs/ Creatinine Kinase in three months

Purpose: A lumbar puncture can help diagnose serious infections, check for protein levels in the cerebrospinal fluid, or identify other disorders of the central nervous system.

Purpose: This is an imaging-guided lumbar puncture for more complicated cases. We recommend scheduling at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Purpose: An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is an electrophysiological monitoring method to record electrical activity of the heart. Our office has direct access to results obtained there, and it will allow us to access and review results immediately.

Purpose: A sleep study is a procedure where your sleep pattern is monitored and the amount of restful sleep you get is measured. If sleep disorders are present, they are identified and treated. The scheduling department at TIRR Memorial Hermann will contact you to make an appointment. Purpose: A swallow study is a procedure to assess a patient’s ability to swallow different forms of solids and liquids. It helps assess whether a patient is at risk for eating or drinking certain foods, and can help decide how best to administer nutrition to a patient. We will prescribe the appropriate medications with enough refills to last you until your next appointment. Please call your pharmacy first to check about refills for your prescription(s). Please do not lose your prescriptions as it is very difficult for us to provide another copy. Upon completion of your consultation with us, it will be your referring physician’s responsibility to refill your prescriptions. We will communicate with your physician’s office directly to inform them of the medications.

Body Mass Index (BMI): Recommended to maintain BMI <= 25.
Hypertension: Discussed optimal maintenance blood pressure of 120/70 mm Hg.
Hyperlipidemia: Discussed optimal profile of Tot Cholesterol <200, LDL <70, TG <150.
FBS: Discussed optimal FBS level of <100 and HgbA1c of <5.7.
Physical Exercise: Recommended 20 – 30 minutes a day, 4 to 5 times a week.
Mental Exercise: Recommended staying mentally active, including social engagement and/or with complex tasks such as games, reading, and crossword puzzles.
